The Power of Delegation: How to Scale Without Burning Out
Most entrepreneurs don’t actually have a growth problem. They have a delegation problem. On a recent episode of the Relentless Growth Podcast, Jack Mayer and I broke down the real reason so many founders hit a ceiling. It usually isn’t the market or the team. It’s the founder still holding onto work they should have handed off a long time ago. I’ve lived this firsthand running three companies, and here’s what I’ve learned about letting go the right way.
Delegation Is the Hidden Ceiling on Your Business
I own and operate a construction company, a real estate sales and property management company, and a real estate investment company. There is simply no way I could be where I am today if I hadn’t started delegating more and more along the way. Early on, when you’re doing everything yourself, your business can only grow as far as your own two hands and hours in the day will take it. Delegation is what removes that ceiling.
Start With the Tasks That Have Clear Outcomes
For me, the delegation journey started out of necessity. I was on the road so much that I physically couldn’t get to certain in-person tasks, so I had to hand them off. That turned out to be a good place to start, because physical or field work often has a clear, defined outcome. When you ask someone to do something and there’s an obvious result you can check, it’s much easier to delegate than fuzzy, open-ended work. If you’re just getting started letting go, begin with the tasks where success is easy to define.
Accept That Mistakes Are Part of the Bargain
Here’s the part most people struggle with: when you delegate, mistakes are going to happen. I make mistakes every day, and I made a lot more in the past. That’s just part of the deal you’re making. When you hand off a task, some things are going to get messed up here and there. But as long as the person is handling it the right way and growing from it, that’s exactly how you keep scaling. I’d almost rather have someone make a few mistakes, even if it costs a little money, if it means they improve and we build better systems so it doesn’t happen again.
Delegation Is Really Leadership
The more I’ve done this, the more I’ve realized delegation is as much about leadership as it is about offloading work. Part of your job as a leader is giving people enough room to make mistakes, not catastrophic ones, but enough to learn and get better at what they do. When you create that environment, your operators grow, your systems improve, and you free yourself up to work on the business instead of being buried in it.
The Bottom Line
If you feel like your business has stalled out, take an honest look at what you’re still holding onto. The single biggest unlock for me was getting out of the way, trusting good people with real outcomes, and accepting that growth comes with a few bumps along the road. That’s how you scale multiple businesses without burning out.
